MONON RAIL-TRAIL

Indianapolis, Indiana

Rundell Ernstberger Associates, LLC completed a Comprehensive Master Plan for this 10 mile trail development in the city of Indianapolis, which includes schematic design drawings, preliminary cost estimates, and construction phasing plans.

Over the course of several public meetings, design standards for the trail and associated facilities were developed, in an effort to lend a unique identity to the project and establish a high level of design quality throughout all phases of development.  Specific design elements of the Monon Rail-Trail project include layout of the multi-use trail, bridge rehabilitation, street crossings, trailheads, a signage system, and site amenities.

Upon completion of the Master Plan, REA developed construction documentation for several phases of the Monon Rail-Trail, which include five renovated bridges, one new bridge, and approximately 7.5 miles of trail.  The design team also provided construction administration services for the project.

Working with the City of Indianapolis, the design team has created one the most successful trail projects in the country.  It is hard to understate the significance of this project to the City of Indianapolis:

  • it is the first rail-to-trail constructed in the City.

  • it establishes a model of planning and design for future development of the Indianapolis Greenways system.

  • it is respectful of the historical legacy of the Monon Railroad in its preservation of the Monon identity and its adaptive reuse of a historic landscape and its structures.

  • it promotes the stewardship and protection of natural, cultural, and historic resources along the trail for future generations.

  • it is an alternative transportation facility that promotes the physical connection of the community's valuable resources including parks, schools, neighborhoods, places of work, cultural sites, and wildlife habitats.

  • over one million people per year use the trail, with daily traffic counts of runners, rollerbladers, bikers, and walkers exceeding 4,000 people

The Monon Rail-Trail is a project that has had an immediate and profound impact on the landscape of the City, as evidenced by the community's enthusiastic response to and adoption of the project.  The project has won numerous design awards, including the American Society of Landscape Architects’ Centennial Medallion Award, given in recognition of the nation’s most significant landscapes.
