Carpenter Nature Preserve Named 2026 AIM Green Project of the Year

Carpenter Nature Preserve has been recognized as the 2026 Green Project of the Year by Accelerate Indiana Municipalities (AIM), honoring a project that demonstrates how conservation, ecological restoration, and public access can work together to create a lasting community asset.

Located on 215 acres along Eagle Creek in Zionsville, the preserve transforms a former golf course into a destination centered on the protection and restoration of natural systems. The project restores prairie, wetland, and woodland habitats while addressing invasive species and strengthening connections to Eagle Creek. More than 1,500 trees have been planted, with additional ecological restoration planned in future phases.

‍

At the same time, Carpenter Nature Preserve creates new opportunities for people to experience and learn from the landscape. Phase 1 includes approximately two miles of paved and rustic trails, scenic overlooks, a wildlife blind, outdoor classroom, nature playground, amphitheater, and prairie pavilion. These amenities invite visitors to explore  the preserve while fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural systems that make the site unique.

‍

The project also reflects a collaborative approach to conservation. Significant public and private investment has helped make the preserve possible, including a $3 million Next Level Conservation Trust grant, $500,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, and funding through Indiana's Stream and Wetland Mitigation Program, along with community and private support.

‍

For REA, the preserve represents an opportunity to shape a landscape where stewardship and experience are complementary goals. The master plan establishes a framework for protecting the site's ecological resources while creating meaningful opportunities for people to gather, explore, learn, and connect with nature.

‍

Future phases will continue that vision through additional trails, ecological restoration, wetland boardwalks, a tree canopy walk, and a nature education center, further expanding the preserve's role as a regional destination for conservation, education, and outdoor recreation.

‍

REA is proud to have worked alongside the Town of Zionsville, Zionsville Parks and Recreation, Zionsville Parks Foundation, and the many community partners who helped turn the vision for Carpenter Nature Preserve into reality.
