The Union Station Underpass & Placemaking Enhancements project is transforming an important downtown connection into a more welcoming, engaging, and memorable experience.
As part of a joint event hosted by the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS), Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), and Structural Engineers Association (SEA), Phil Arden led attendees on a tour of the project, offering a firsthand look at the design taking shape during construction.
The project reimagines the underpass as more than a route between destinations. New paving, enhanced lighting, and art installations will create a stronger sense of place while improving the experience of moving through this important downtown connection. Together, these elements will bring greater character, comfort, and visual interest to the underpass while reinforcing its role within the larger urban fabric of Indianapolis.
Walking an active construction site provided a unique opportunity to see these ideas move from plans to reality. Phil shared the design vision, construction progress, and the details that will shape the character of the completed space.
