Speedway Roundabout and Gateway

The Town of Speedway partnered with REA to design a new community gateway and transform the 16th Street roundabout, two signature projects that mark key entrances to the town and reinforce its identity as the home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Together, these improvements create a memorable sense of arrival while strengthening the connection between downtown Speedway and the iconic racetrack.

At I-465, a sculptural gateway sign sits atop a raised site to overcome visual obstructions and create a bold first impression. The curved wall features six-foot-tall "SPEEDWAY" letters and perforated metal panels inspired by speed, innovation, and the town's industrial heritage. At the 16th Street roundabout near IMS Gate 1, the design enhances the pedestrian experience with a curved limestone wall, interpretive storytelling panels, and landscaped berms that reference the Speedway's iconic banked turns. Metal lettering encircling the roundabout features lyrics from "Back Home Again in Indiana," celebrating a tradition that has become synonymous with Speedway and the Indianapolis 500.
